Cooley coolly keeps five different charity races running at once

December 03, 1991|By Michael Reeb

Dave Cooley knows a thing or two about putting on races. It's when he's asked to know four or five things, though, that the production gets unwieldy.

"Two separate events are the most I've done in one day," says Cooley, who has been directing races in the Baltimore metropolitan area for five years. "I've done as many as four in one weekend."

Even by his standards, next weekend figures to be a tall order. The Arthritis Foundation, which is staging arthritis runs nationwide, has asked Cooley to oversee its races in Maryland. Cooley's calendar Sunday calls for Jingle Bell Runs at Hunt Valley, Marley Station Mall, Francis Scott Key Mall in Frederick, Hagerstown Junior College and Cumberland all on the same day -- and a few at the same time.

"Last year was the first year I did it for them," Cooley says. "The Jingle Bell Run is a nationwide event, but there's a chapter in each city. They are done differently in different states, though. Connecticut, for example, is strictly an indoor walk because of the weather."

He won't be without assistance. The Annapolis Striders have volunteered to assist at Marley Station, and the Queen City Striders will be lending a hand with the Cumberland 5K.

"I get a real kick out of putting it together and seeing it work well," he says. "I like to see the whole thing mesh."

Cooley, 59, an agent with the Internal Revenue Service when he's not directing races, says he'll continue to put on events as long as he can help charitable organizations and the Baltimore Road Runners Club, with whom he works hand-in-hand.

And if he falls short of his goal, the Arthritis Foundation has set a Jingle Bell Run for Arthritis 5K at Salisbury the following weekend that he will oversee.

For information on any of the arthritis runs, call the Arthritis Foundation at (410) 561-8090 or Cooley at 494-8649.
