Pizza John's Self-Service Restaurant and Carryout

113 Back River Neck Road, Essex, (410) 687-7733. Pizza John's is bright, noisy, busy. The pace is quick, the service limited. Soft drinks come in paper cups, beer in throwaway plastic. The food is plain and plentiful. Pizza John's is somewhat like a fast-food restaurant. You place your order and seat yourself. The menu offers pizza, spaghetti, rigatoni and ravioli with a variety of sauces. There are also salads, subs and platters featuring crab cakes, fried chicken and seafood. $ 1/2 moderately inexpensive. (Last visited 11/91.) 257 West St., Annapolis, (410) 263-8424. Although it wasn't a typical night at Papazee's -- a birthday party for the chef was in progress -- we were glad we came. Pink walls and napery, ceremonial headdresses and delicate portraits of Thai beauties in traditional dress set a scene that is (in the absence of boisterous birthday parties, anyway) serene and feminine. And the food is, for the most part, top-notch, if a bit more expensive than the best local Thai. $$moderate. (Last visited 11/91.)

LYNN WILLIAMS 1218-1220 N. Charles St., (410) 727-3322. Henry & Jeff's is a deli on the first floor, a bar in the cellar and a restaurant upstairs. What gets eaten and drunk at the restaurant is mostly deli stuff -- sandwiches, burgers, salads, and simple entrees. Tables were small, chairs weren't uncomfortable, and though the food was OK, it wasn't any better than OK. Catherine's Bar-B-Q spare ribs were super sweet and super oily, fried flounder was tasteless. You want coffee and dessert? Order the Kentucky Derby pie. $$moderate. (Last visited 9/91.)
