A capsule look at the state playoffs

TODAY'S CLASS 2A FINALS

(at University of Maryland)

9) Middletown (11-1) vs. Allegany (10-1) * Time: 4

Outlook: Middletown hasn't lost since a 3-0 defeat in its season opener to Thomas Johnson. The Knights posted a 17-7 win over Overlea in the semifinals. RB/LB Mike Pilch leads Middletown. He ran for nearly 700 yards and 14 TDs during the regular season and has five TDs in two postseason games. Middletown never has won a state title and lost in the championship game in 1981. Allegany has won five state titles, most recently in 1989. FB Steve Milburn has 1,308 yards and 16 TDs.

TODAY'S CLASS 4A FINALS

(at University of Maryland)

?/ High Point (10-2) vs. Quince Orchard (11-1) * Time: 7

Outlook: Quince Orchard never has been to the state final and High Point has been there just once (1983), although this is High Point's fifth playoff appearance. Quince Orchard's defense has led a pair of one-point playoff victories. RBs Ray Gray and Jacob Ritchie combined for 1,678 yards during the regular season and QB Larry Hurd threw for 979 yards and eight TDs. High Point RB Rhad Miles has 1,707 yards and 23 TDs. High Point has allowed just 92 points.

TOMORROW'S CLASS 1A FINALS

;+ Wilde Lake (12-0) vs. Smithsburg (11-1) * Time: 4

Outlook: Wilde Lake can become only the sixth team to win back-to-back state titles. Last year, the Wildecats won a Class 2A title. Wilde Lake has won an area-best 25 straight games and has outscored its 12 opponents this season, 396-47. Last week, the Wildecats ripped Milford Mill, 42-0, in the semifinals. The week before they beat Easton, 43-7, in the quarterfinals. QB Phil White has thrown for 1,284 yards and 13 TDs and also run for five TDs. RB Damon Hamlin has 1,251 yards and 24 TDs. OL James Easterly is the big blocker. The defense is led by LB Brent Guyton (four interceptions, four fumble recoveries), DB Andre Martin (two interceptions, 10 knockdowns), DB/P George Bradford (seven interceptions, 38.6 punt avg.) and DLs Tony Farace (seven sacks) and Blaise Connolly-Duggan (four sacks, five fumble recoveries). Washington County's Smithsburg lost to Kent in last year's 1A final, 8-7. Smithsburg has been in the state finals seven times and has won four titles, most recently in 1988.

TOMORROW'S CLASS 3A FINALS

(at University of Maryland)

A1 Linganore (11-1) vs. McDonough-Charles (12-0) * Time: 7

Outlook: Like Wilde Lake, McDonough is trying to join six other schools that have won back-to-back state titles. McDonough beat C.M. Wright in last year's Class 3A title game, 33-20. McDonough also won state titles in 1983 and '85. The Rams never have lost a state title game. RB Sherron Gudger has 2,055 yards and 24 TDs. Frederick County's Linganore has been to the state finals twice and won a state title in 1989. RB John Seymour had 306 yards and the winning TD in last week's 12-8 semifinal win over Douglass-PG. He has run for more than 1,800 yards and 20 TDs this season.
