Mcintyre Wins By A Nose

November 27, 1991

When Brian McIntyre pulled away from the pack only a quarter-mile into the Strider's 10K race at Longfellow last Sunday, Jim Carbary decided to go with him.

The two triathletes then engaged in a serious battle for the rest of the race, with first McIntyre and then Carbarytaking the lead. Neither got more than a few steps in front of the other, although they left the rest of the field far behind.

Finally, near the top of the last hill, less than 200 yards from the finish, McIntyre threw in a surge that caught his adversary flat-footed and won the race by one second.

In the women's 10K event, Debbie Kocay, weakened by a virus, dropped behind Linda Ausfresser after only a mile and could only watch as Ausfresser cruised to victory in 49:38. The win was Ausfresser's second in a row.

After finishing second in the two-mile race the week before, Phil Hurley roared back on Sunday with a convincing 10:39 win over short distance specialist Bobby Van Allen. Hurley used the last, steep hill to put even more distance between himself and number two, whom he beat by nearly 20 seconds.

Dana Strickland returned to the Strider races after an absence of several weeks. Running with Junior Strider coach Craig Chasse, she crushed the two-mile women's field with an impressive 12:27.

Finally, new father Gerry Clapper ran most of the 15K race with JamesO'Brien and then nipped him at the very end by one second. Both runners just missed breaking one hour on the hilly course.

Last Saturday, a surprisingly large contingent of 11 Striders finished the JFK 50-Mile Ultra-Marathon in Virginia. Veteran ultra-runner Tom Green ledthe group and made it look easy with a 7:54:00, which placed him 39 out of several hundred.

Green also assembled a Strider Ultra-Marathon racing team: Tom Brown (8:18:05), Joe Wasserman (8:32:14), Eric Kocay (9:09:23) and Elvio Levri (9:29:31). The team came agonizingly close to winning the team competition and lost to Team RASAC by only 35 points out of 352.
