Masked Man Robs Bank

A masked man wearing a parka robbed the Signet Bank in Ellicott Cityyesterday, escaping with an undisclosed amount of cash, county police said.

The man, who had a stocking pulled over his head, entered the bank, located in the 10300 block of U.S. 40, shortly before 10:20a.m. and pulled out a large blue steel revolver, police said.

One of the tellers turned over the cash and the man left the bankand was seen leaving the area in a maroon-colored Toyota automobile,police said.

Four employees and one customer were in the bank at the time. No one was injured, police said.

The robber is describedas a white male, approximately 20 to 35 years old, and about 5-feet,8-inches tall, police said. The parka was light gray with fur aroundthe hood.

COLUMBIA BOY, 16 STABBED ON FOOTPATH

A 16-year-old Columbia boy was stabbed in the side Friday during a fight that began between two groups of teen-agers on a footpath behind the Kings Contrivance Village Center, county police said.

The youth was taken by ambulance to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where he waslisted in stable condition last night.

Police said the youth was one of a group of five that began fighting with two other Columbia youths behind the village center at 8:30 p.m.

One of the youths, whosaid he was about to be robbed, pulled out a pen knife and stabbed the boy, police said. A fistfight ensued and the boy with the pen knife was beaten by several of the teen-agers, police said.

He was treated and released for facial injuries at Howard County General Hospital.

TWO MEN CHARGED WITH BURGLARY, THEFT

Two Baltimore men were arrested yesterday on burglary and auto theft charges after an EllicottCity resident returned home and caught them allegedly ransacking hishouse, county police said.

Police said the man arrived at his house, located in the 2600 block of Thompson Drive, to find a strange truck parked in his driveway at 2 p.m. When he went inside, he found his stereo equipment piled up at the front door and the rest of the home in a disarray, police said.

The burglars had fled, apparently when they spotted the man coming up the driveway, police said.

Both suspects were apprehended about an hour later by state police, who arrested them on Interstate 70 after recovering suspected burglary tools in the stolen truck they were driving, police said.

Arrested were Franklin Lindsay Chavis, 35, of the 900 block of Honaker Court, andRobert Lee McLucas, 33, of the 1100 block of Carroll Street.

Police also expect to charge the two men with additional burglary counts,after detectives found additional property at a Baltimore residence where one of the men was staying. Some of the property had recently been stolen from Howard County, police said.

Chavis was being held on no bail last night at the Howard County Detention Center, while McLucas was being held on $5,000 bond.

8800 block Town and Country Boulevard: Someone attempted to steal a 1989 Chevrolet Blazer sometime before 7 a.m. Friday from a residential area, but was unable to start the vehicle.

9000 block Town and Country Boulevard: A 1988 Hyundai Excel automobile was reported stolen at 6 a.m. Thursday from a residential area.

3100 West Springs Drive: Someone attempted to steal a 1988 Nissan automobile sometime before 7:45 a.m. Thursday from a residential area.

3200 block Normandy Woods Drive: A 1988 Hyundai Excel automobile was reported stolen at 9:30 a.m. Thursday from a residential area.

3700 block Church Road: A 1988 Chevrolet Caprice was reported stolen at 7 a.m. Thursday from a residential area.

8400 block U.S. 40: A 1992 Buick Regal automobile was reported stolen at 12 p.m. Monday from Rea Keach Buick dealership.

3400 block Plum Tree Drive: A 1977 Chevrolet Camaro automobile was reported stolen at 7:10 a.m. Thursday.

U.S. 40 at U.S. 29: A 1987 Chevrolet Corvette was reported stolen at 11 a.m. Saturday from O'Donnell Pontiac dealership.

7200 block Cradlerock Way: Someone smashed a window of the Simply Soccer Plus store sometime before 8:50 a.m. Friday and stole several clothing items.

7000 block Copperwood Way: A television and abroom handle were reported stolen at 10:30 a.m. Saturday from a homethat was entered after someone removed a screen from a window.

7500 block Weatherworn Way: Someone smashed the storm window of a home at 12 p.m. Sunday in an apparent burglary attempt, but did not gain entry into the home.

5700 block Stevens Forest Road: A 1989 Ford Tempo automobile was reported stolen at 7:40 a.m. Monday from a residential area.
