Rosecroft races tommorrow unaffected by grandstand fire

Rosecroft will run its regularly scheduled 12-race card tomorrow night, despite the devastating fire Saturday that destroyed the track's grandstand.

The clubhouse area at the Prince George's County harness track was unscathed by the blaze and should provide ample room for the fans, track officials said.

Peter Piringer, a spokesman for the Prince George's County fire department, said yesterday that investigators have attributed the cause of the fire to an electrical malfunction.

"The fire started in a utility room area near an electrical panel," Piringer said. "The fire then quickly followed electrical conduits."

The fire and resulting water damage knocked out the track's pari-mutuel betting system. A back-up system will be provided by Delmarva Downs, Rosecroft's companion track located near Ocean City.

Post time for the first race tomorrow is 7:30 p.m. Admission will be free. Rosecroft will be dark on Thanksgiving.
