Last-second shot lifts W. Md.

WESTMINSTER -- Junior Scott Lyon made the first of two free throws with one second remaining to lift Western Maryland (2-1) to a 73-72 victory over Messiah (0-2) last night at the Physical Education Center.

After Lyon converted the first foul shot, he intentionally missed the second one, banging the ball hard off the backboard. Time expired before Messiah could get off a final shot.

Scott Roth rallied the Green Terrors from a 72-68 deficit with 2 minutes, 10 seconds left. His layup with 1:55 left and his short jumper 25 seconds later pulled Western Maryland even at 72.

Freshman Pat Young (Mount St. Joseph's) scored a game-high 21, 17 in the first half, to pace Western Maryland.
