DOVER, Del. -- Donell Thomas' basket broke a tie at 76 with 2 minutes, 30 seconds left, and Delaware State (1-0) hung on for an 81-78 victory over Mount St. Mary's (0-2) at Memorial Gym last night.

The Mount, which rallied from an early 18-point deficit, was within 69-61 when Jeff Hall scored 11 of his side's next 15 points to get it a tie at 76. Durant Ratcliffe's foul shot with 13 seconds left accounted for the final score. The visitors' Kevin Booth had his final three-point attempt blocked.

Delaware State ran off to a 20-2 lead in the first 4:16, but the Mount got within 12 at the half, and 54-51 on a basket by Dan Kalinowski with just under seven minutes to play. The Hornets helped by going the first 6:30 without a field goal.

Mount St. Mary's, which had 41 turnovers in a Saturday night loss at Maryland, started out the same way, going 1-for-5 from the field and committing five turnovers in its first 10 possessions. Delaware State had similar problems with 13 first-half turnovers and the visitors stayed in the game with 16-for-25 shooting at the foul line.

Booth led the Mount in scoring with 28 points, followed by Hall's 18, all but two in the second half.
