Melissa Wasowski of St. Mary's scored the only goal as the South team defeated the North, 1-0, in the first Maryland State High School Field Hockey All-Star game last night at Johns Hopkins University.

Wasowski scored on a rebound from 15 yards out early in the first period, and the South's defense made it stand up for the victory.

"I dribbled in down the right side and shot," said Wasowski, "but it hit the goalie's pad and bounced off. I had a clear shot from there."

The game, which features seniors nominated by coaches in the Maryland State High School Field Hockey Association, was played in three 20-minute periods with a running clock.

"This is an outstanding event for field hockey in the state of Maryland," said Severna Park's Lil Shelton, the chairwoman of the state association. "We had about 20 college coaches here, and this really helps to promote the sport."
