Mid Atlantic Conference Southwest Section Women's Outlooks

Gettysburg Bullets

November 17, 1991

Head coach: Mike Kirkpatrick, third year

Assistant coaches: Judy Gembo

Last year's record: 13-11 overall, 6-4 and third in the Middle Atlantic Conference Southwest Section

Top returnees: Seniors -- guard Beth Elbon, forward Donna Bourke; sophomores -- guard/forwards Amy Landis, Heather Sanner, guards Daniella Skypala, Jacquie Gatti

Topnewcomers: Freshmen -- forwards Maureen Andrews, Meggan Nolan, center Kelly Geise, guard Tammy Seed

Coach's comments: "We lost a lot of starters from last year. Gettysburg Hospital, we're keeping them ingood business. We're flipping a bunch of coins and hoping people come up healthy."

The Carroll County Sun's outlook: The team lost three of the top four scorers and rebounders from last year to graduation, injury and other problems, so repeating last year's record might be difficult. The team includes just two seniors and no juniors, so sophomores and freshmen will carry much of the load. Senior Donna Bourke led the team in scoring (11.5) and rebounds (10.0) per game and will have to carry an even larger burden this year. The other senior, guard Beth Elbon, led the team with 53 assists as the primary ball-handler last year and will assume those duties this year, too. Elsewhere, though, youth and inexperience will prevail. There is some height, with three players 5-foot-10 or taller, but all are freshmen. The other starting guard likely will be sophomore Heather Sanner, who was 14-for-61 from three-point range. But the team, which averaged 67.8 points per game last year, lost 37.5 points to the graduation and other attrition. The Bullets' record may fall a bit this year with the lack of experienced supporters, but conference coaches still picked Gettysburg to finish third in the conference. If the tall freshmen play well, the team could live up to that billing.
