Mid Atlantic Conference Southwest Section Women's Outlooks

Western Maryland Green Terrors

November 17, 1991

Head coach: Becky Martin, 11th year

Assistant coach: Vince DePalmer, fourth year

Last year's record: 11-12 overall, 4-6 and fourth in the Middle Atlantic Conference Southwest Section

Top returnees: Seniors -- guards Angela Alfano, Debbie Shockley, Rhonda Small, forward Claudia Hennemyre; sophomores -- guard Susan Head, center Marie Pawlowski.

Top newcomers: Junior -- guard Kendra Weible; freshmen -- forward Andrea Romich, guards Christy McCauley, Christa Mose

Coach's comments: "We're very offensive-oriented, but the critical aspect is going to be the defense. Because we do not have a large lineup, we're going to have to play a very pressure-type defense. How long we can sustain that during a game will be the question. As a coach, you'd always like taller players, but we're very pleased with the mix. We have some speed and some quickness. Everybody plays whatever's necessary. We have outstanding shooting guards and three-point shooters."

The CarrollCounty Sun's outlook: The Green Terrors look strong, despite only having 10 players on the squad. Obviously, an injury, especially to oneof the seniors, could devastate them this year. But assuming the team stays healthy, four seniors back from a team that managed to go 11-12 with an eight-player squad last year means a lot of experience on the court. Debbie Shockley led the team statistically, averaging eight rebounds per game and canning 36 percent of her three-point attempts. Underclassmen offer some help, too. Westminster grad Susan Head adjusted well to college play last year with a 39 percent shooting percentage and should hit her stride this year. She'll be aided by fellowsophomore Marie Pawlowski, a 6-footer. Though it has speed and experience, the team needs bodies to keep the bench warmed.
