Michelin comes to America with publication of Washington, D.C., travel guide

Michelin, renowned publisher of travel maps and travel guides throughout Europe, has declared a commitment to the greening of America.

A step toward that goal was the introduction last month of a Green Guide to Washington, D.C. The guide, which retails for $14.95, is the first Michelin guide to be published in America.

A Michelin Travel Publications team was established in 1989 in Greenville, S.C., home of Michelin North America's corporate headquarters, to produce travel guides for North America.

Other Green Guides are planned in the near future for such destinations as Quebec Province, California and Florida. Maps of cities and regions of the United States and Canada also are in the works.

"Our goal is to become as complete a Michelin in North America as our parent organization is in Europe," said Pete Hollibaugh, director of Michelin Travel Publications in North America. "To do that, Michelin maps and guides are a vital part of the strategy."

The total program is called "The Greening of America," because of the distinctive green cover of the Michelin sightseeing collection, the Michelin Green Guide. Michelin also produces a Red Guide, which is a hotel and restaurant guide.

Boasting the familiar green cover and vertical format, the Washington Green Guide includes descriptions of about 150 sights, ranked according to the star-rating system, long a hallmark of Michelin Guides.

Sights are presented alphabetically, with itinerary maps to make travel planning logical and efficient.

Included for the first time in a Green Guide is a 30-page street atlas.

The Washington Green Guide joins the current selection of more than 200 guides and maps inspired by the goal the company's founders set nearly a century ago: to provide detailed, accurate and unbiased information to motorists and tourists throughout the world.
