CITY SPRINGS CAFE
Mercy Medical Center, 301 St. Paul Place. Hours: 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays to Fridays. Call 659-2900; FAX 332-0325.
Got a hankering for hospital food? Probably not, but this is different. If you're looking for a clean, friendly place to pick up breakfast, lunch or an early dinner, City Springs Cafe at the renovated Mercy Medical Center is worth considering. This self-service cafe is more downtown deli than hospital cafeteria. It's a bright, quiet room off the new lobby with windows overlooking the hospital's circular drive. You can carry your food out, of course, or eat in.
The menu includes a sampling of sandwiches and salads, with some intriguing combos, such as Frazier's Finest -- Lebanon bologna, havarti and onion ($4) and Dublin's Dare -- medium rare roast beef and cole slaw with blue cheese ($4.15).
For those on restricted diets, there are low-salt ham and cheeses and a variety of crunchy condiments, such as alfalfa sprouts and sun-dried tomatoes.
There are hot dishes -- including soup and quiche -- that change daily. Recently, these included minestrone, stuffed green peppers and meatballs and spaghetti. I had a side order of macaroni and cheese ($1.25). It was creamy with a rich, cheesy flavor.
The cafe offers a variety of muffins, pastries and luscious-looking desserts. And with them, how about a cup of cappuccino?
