Baltimore Orioles -- Named Jerry Narron manager and Steve Luebber pitching coach of Class AAA Rochester. Named Don Buford manager of Class AA Hagerstown. Named Tom Brown (pitching), Wally Moon (hitting) and Reid Nichols (base-running) roving minor-league instructors. Signed P Eric Hetzel and C Todd Pratt. Purchased the contracts of P Richie Lewis and IF Ricky Gutierrez from Rochester; P Mike Oquist and IF Manny Alexander from Hagerstown; and P Brad Pennington from Class A Frederick. Waived P Jeff Robinson and P Brian DuBois for the purpose of giving them their unconditional release.

New York Yankees -- Named Ron Hassey advance scout.

Basketball

Atlanta Hawks -- Announced that G Travis Mays will miss the rest of the season after surgery Tuesday to repair two ruptured tendons in his right ankle.

New Jersey Nets -- Re-signed C Dave Feitl.

Seattle SuperSonics -- Activated Quintin Dailey (Cardinal Gibbons) from the injured list. Placed F Shawn Kemp on the injured list.

Arizona State -- Announced that the following 4 basketball players will be suspended for unauthorized use of campus telephones: Jamal Faulkner (Pacific-10 Conference Freshman of the Year) and G Stevin Smith will sit out 3 games during the fall semester; G Lynn Collins will miss 4 games; and F Dwayne Fontana will miss 6 games.

Canisius -- Announced the retirement of football coach Tom Hersey.

Duke -- Signed G Chris Collins (Northbrook, Ill.) and F Tony Moore (Washington), according to their high-school coaches.

Fairfield -- Announced they will compete at the Division I level in tTC men's lacrosse and women's soccer.
