ROCKVILLE -- Bruce Lehnhard made it a clean sweep of the individual Middle Atlantic PGA championships for which he was eligible when he held off Jimmy Hayes, 2 and 1, for the match-play title at Woodmont CC yesterday.

Lehnhard, 48, the head professional at Lake of the Woods GC in Locust Grove, had won section and head professional honors, and his quarterfinal victory Tuesday clinched the section's Player of the Year award. He had won the match-play title in 1982.

Hayes, a teaching professional at Redgate GC, and a finalist for the second straight year, made a late rally after going 3-down at the 14th hole of the South Course. He won the 15th with a par when Lehnhard three-putted, and took the 16th with a 4-foot birdie putt.

Both reached the green in regulation at the par-4 17th. On the treacherous surface, Hayes faced a slippery, downhill 18-foot putt, and Lehnhard a 13-footer. Hayes hit his too hard, the ball rolled over the edge of the cup, finally stopped 12 feet below the cup, and he missed coming back. Lehnhard, making sure not to get careless, two-putted for the win.

In morning semifinals, Jim Muething turned 1-up on Lehnhard, then bogeyed five holes in a row, and the eventual champion closed it out, 4 and 3, with a birdie at the 15th.
