Knicks beat Nets at Garden for 12th straight time, 98-96

November 13, 1991

NEW YORK -- Xavier McDaniel scored 28 points and Patrick Ewing had 24 points and a key block of a shot by rookie Kenny Anderson as the New York Knicks beat the New Jersey Nets, 98-96, last night.

The victory was the 12th straight at home for the Knicks over the Nets, who last won at Madison Square Garden on March 13, 1987.

But New York had to overcome a 15-point fourth quarter -- including just three in the final 6:20 -- to defeat the Nets for the sixth consecutive time since the 1989-90 season.

The Knicks led 65-51 three minutes into the second half, but 10 points by Drazen Petrovic in the final 5:19 of the third period helped the Nets close to 83-75.

A 3-pointer by Anderson, who scored 15 points in his second NBA game, made it 87-82 before an 8-2 burst by the Knicks rebuilt the margin to 11 with 6:20 left.

But the Nets, who got 17 points from Derrick Coleman, rallied again, closing the gap to 96-93 on Chris Morris' fast-break dunk with 2:18 left.

After Ewing blocked a layup attempt by Anderson with 1:33 left and John Starks blocked a layup by Mookie Blaylock with 42 seconds remaining, Anderson finally made it it 96-95 with 18 seconds to go.

Starks missed the first of his two free throws, giving the Nets a chance to tie when Anderson was fouled with 2.7 seconds remaining, but he missed both free throws. McDaniel and Petrovic exchanged free throws in the final second.
