County Runners Near Top At States

Despite Individual Showings, Anne Arundel Can't Gain A Team Title

WESTMINSTER — It's been a while since an Anne Arundel County team has won a state cross country title, but when you're competing with the best, earninga trophy isn't easy.

So, county running aficionados will have to be content with some strong individual showings in the 1991 state meet held Saturday at Western Maryland.

County boys finished second, third and fourth in the hotly contested Class 4A meet, and four county boys teams were among the top nine.

In the girls 4A race -- the most tightly packed team competitionof the day -- Severna Park finished a disappointing but relatively close fifth.

Old Mill's Scott Boetig, Broadneck's Tim Collins and Severna Park's Jarrett Hon finished just behind winner Troy Harry of Quince Orchard (Montgomery County) in the boys 4A race.

"I got a bad start, and it took me a while to catch up," said Boetig, who, like the other two top Arundel finishers, is a senior. "I tried to catch up with him at the end, but I guess he heard me coming behind him."

Boetig finished just one second behind Harry, a junior, who covered the hilly, 3-mile course in 16 minutes, 3 seconds. Collins crossed in16:12 and Hon in 16:17.

"I finished a lot better than I thought Iwould," said Collins. "I was hoping for the top 10 and praying for the top seven."

Severna Park coach Ed Purpura, meanwhile, wanted tomake sure Hon didn't get lost in the shuffle.

"Jarrett doesn't get the credit he deserves," Purpura said.

The Falcons, who figured to have an outside shot at the state title if Westminster of Carroll County or Quince Orchard faltered, wound up fourth.

The Falcons, ranked seventh in the most recent Sun poll, actually had tied eighth-ranked Perry Hall of Baltimore County for third, but Perry Hall came out ahead based on the better showing of its sixth runner.

Old Millwound up in sixth, while Broadneck took eighth and Meade ninth.

The girls race turned out to be a barn-burner, with just 32 points separating the top six squads. But when the dust settled, it was WinstonChurchill of Montgomery County -- a team few observers had mentionedwith the other top teams -- that took first, with 94, just five points ahead of Quince Orchard.

Churchill had finished behind Quince Orchard in an all-Montgomery County Region I that Purpura thought was relatively weak. The top talent, many thought, was with the Falcons, or three Region II teams -- Dulaney of Baltimore County, Frederick and Westminster.

Frederick and Dulaney, in fact, tied for third with100, but the Cadets earned the third spot because of a better sixth-place finish. Severna Park had 123 and Westminster, 126.

"We ran good up top," Purpura said.

"But we had a two-minute gap between No. 2 and No. 3. That's what we've been fighting all year."

As expected, Amanda White of Dulaney crushed the competition, with a course record 17:25, and Westminster standout Stephanie Morningstar was a distant second in 18:59.

Senior Fran Mackney, the anchor of the Falcons team for three years, took third in 19:14, and Broadneck senior Jeanne Rimar was fourth, one second behind. Freshman Brianna Weidman finished seventh for the Falcons in 19:35, but the next-closest teammate, senior Kerri Hidenfelter, didn't cross until 21:30, taking 42nd.
