Military Flags To Be Raised At Cemetery Ceremony

November 10, 1991

Twelve U.S. flags presented to families in military burials during World Wars I and II will be raised on 12 flagpoles tomorrow as part ofthe dedication of the "Avenue of Flags" at the Baltimore National Cemetery on Frederick Road in Baltimore.

In the future, the flags will be raised on Veteran's Day and Memorial Day.

The ceremony is the result of the efforts of Eugene H. Shaffer Sr. of Ellicott City.

Shaffer, a member of VFW Post 7472 and American Legion Post 156, has spent the last 2 1/2 months obtaining the donated flags, raising money for the flagpoles and organizing a roster ofspeakers.

The list of speakers includes Maj. Gen. James F. Fretterd of the Maryland National Guard, Capt. J. Frederick Ver Planck of the Coast Guard and Col. Martin L. Kaufman of the Air Force.

Although 18 burial flags were donated by survivors, Shaffer has been able to pay to raise only 12 for Wednesday.

He says he hopes the remaining six will be raised by next Memorial Day. Those wishing to contribute may contact him at 465-4491.
