One Smart Swimmer

Candie Johnson of Westminster has been selected to the U.S. SwimmingScholastic All-America team by U.S. Swimming, the sport's governing body.

The 15-year-old Westminster High junior was honored based onher 4.0 grade point average and her swimming achievements. She had the fastest time among all 15-16 age group swimmers in the country in the 50-yard freestyle last year with her effort of 23.25 seconds.

Johnson also swam the third-fastest 100 freestyle of the year in her age group. The rankings were published in the November issue of Swimming World magazine.

Johnson competes for the Retriever AquaticClub swim team out of the University of Maryland Baltimore County inCatonsville, which is coached by UMBC collegiate coach Sid Burkot. Johnson also has swum for the Westminster Riding Club team in the Central Maryland Swim League in the summer and competed in the 1990 U.S. Olympic Festival.
