Calvert Hall tops Friends, 5-0, in quarterfinals MSA soccer

Bryan Bugarin scored two goals and had an assist, as second-ranked Calvert Hall (15-1) defeated visiting Friends (10-7-1), 5-0, yesterday in the quarterfinals of the Maryland Scholastic Association's A Conference soccer tournament.

J. J. Kremer added two goals and James Oh had two assists for the Cardinals.

In other quarterfinal games:

Frank Sweeney's two goals led No. 14 John Carroll (13-3-1) over St. Mary's (8-7-1), 5-0.

The Patriots will visit Calvert Hall tomorrow in the semifinals.

Steve Matcuk, John Fielder and David Carrigan scored second-half goals to lead No. 12 Mount St. Joseph (14-5) over Cardinal Gibbons (6-6-1), 3-1.

Matcuk's goal, on an assist from Joe Vogel, tied the game three minutes into the second half. With 15 minutes left in the game, Maury LaPointe assisted Fielder on the game-winner.

The Gaels will play host to No. 8 Archbishop Curley (12-3-2), which defeated visiting No. 16 Archbishop Spalding (9-6), 1-0.

Anthony Celenza scored the game's only goal early in the second half on an assist from Mike Liber.
