Suspects arrested in 2 slayings

Police have made arrests in the Oct. 25 shotgun murder of a supermarket guard and the fatal Oct. 18 attack on an East Baltimore man.

City police said Maurice T. Sye, 28, of the 2500 block of Emerson St. in West Baltimore, was arrested at 11 a.m. yesterday while walking in the first block of Franklintown Road in West Baltimore. hTC Sye was charged with the first-degree murder of Save-Rite security officer Melvin Powell, 44, of the 2900 block of Arunah Ave. in West Baltimore.

Powell was working at the Save-Rite supermarket in the 1700 block of W. Baltimore St. when a robber armed with a sawed-off shotgun entered the store and demanded money from the cash registers.

Powell drew his 9mm semiautomatic handgun and confronted the robber, who turned and fired once, striking him in the chest. The father of two died at the scene.

Police in Washington, N.C., have taken into custody a suspect in the fatal Oct. 18 fire attack on Morris Gilliam, 20, of the 300 block of Mason Court in East Baltimore.

Police said James Covel, 25, of the 1800 block of Ashland Ave., surrendered to Washington police yesterday after being charged in a warrant with first-degree murder.

Investigators allege that Covel doused Gilliam with a flammable liquid during an argument Oct. 18, then set him on fire. Gilliam died eight days later.
