Igene Biotechnology Inc.

The small Columbia biotechnology company said Monday that it lost $185,361 in the three months that ended Sept. 30, an improvement from the loss of $236,603 in the third quarter of 1990.

The company also said that it has reached an agreement for an unidentified company to produce AstaXin, Igene's natural pigment that is used on fish farms.

Igene President Stephen F. Hiu said that AstaXin is added to the food of farm-grown salmon and trout to give the farm-grown fish the orange color of wild salmon.

Igene makes AstaXin from yeast, he said.

F&E Resource Systems Technology Inc.

This Laurel-based developer of composting and recycling facilities obtained $42 million in financing during the third quarter to begin building a solid waste recycling and composting facility in Baltimore and has initial agreements from the same financing source to start a Prince George's County facility next year.

The company also is in the process of acquiring 421 acres in St. Mary's County for a landfill.
