Is It Time To Raise Taxes?

November 03, 1991

State budget advisers revealed last week that Maryland faces a deficit of $149.5 million on top of $446.5 million deficit-reduction plan put into effect last month.

The announcement means that Gov. William Donald Schaefer and the General Assembly will have to cut state spending for the sixth time in a year.

The governor warned that more money for local governments and "people programs" will get the ax. Harford County administrators expect reductions in state aid to be significant.

Do you think the countyshould raise property taxes, or seek other taxing measures, to balance further aid cuts; or if county government should make further trims in spending and where?
