Top-ranked and unbeaten Centennial (12-0-2) won the state Class 3A, Region III 3A soccer championship in a shootout with No. 12 Atholton (7-5-2) yesterday at Centennial, 4-3.
Centennial's Rehan Gill scored his second goal with 30 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 3-3. The teams battled through two scoreless 10-minute sudden-death overtime periods.
In the shootout, after each team had sent 10 players to the penalty-kick line, the game still was tied as each scored eight times. Atholton missed its final shot, and Centennial's Cullen Meade made his to give the Eagles the victory.
"I'm considered our No. 1 penalty kicker, so I was used to the pressure," said Meade.
Meade mistakenly had headed in a goal for Atholton in the 12th minute of the first half to open the scoring.
In the Maryland Scholastic Association B Conference semifinals, David Gurry scored both goals as host Southern (10-1) defeated Park, 2-0, and Jeremy Price and Jeremy Trimble each scored one goal as Lutheran (9-2) beat host Poly, 2-0. The championship game will be held Nov. 10 at Essex at noon.
