'Rape of Dr. Willis': spare yourself

November 01, 1991|By Chicago Tribune

"The Rape of Dr. Willis," a CBS movie airing at 9 p.m. Sunday (Channel 11), is a demeaning film that concerns the at-knifepoint rape of Willis (Jaclyn Smith) and the unlikely -- i.e. contrived -- circumstances that lead to the rapist showing up critically wounded in the emergency room of his victim.

What will Dr. Willis do?

"As God is my witness," Willis had said shortly after the rape, "if I could have pulled that knife away from him, I would have killed him."

Now with God, and a handful of colleagues, in attendance, Willis does her thing.

The rapist dies, the cops investigate, a grand jury convenes, the hospital wants Willis fired, her colleagues stand by her . . . and we say forget the whole thing.
