College crowd slakes its thirst at Stxx

NIGHT LIFE

November 01, 1991|By Mike Giuliano

Your average college student uses up many yellow magic markers underlining every other sentence in 2-inch-thick chemistry textbooks. So it's easy to understand how such tedious study habits could prompt a collegiate dude to toss aside the books every now and then and toss down some brewskis.

How else does one explain the large quantity of beer being downed by the young and the restless at Stxx Bar & Grill? Gauging by a recent visit, it would probably be more efficient to simply install hoses behind the bar and shower everybody in the vicinity with draft beer.

A recent addition to the collegiate bar roster, Stxx occupies the former site of the sensibly named 27th Street Station at 27th and Howard streets. This is an intersection that Realtors claim for Charles Village, while many longtime residents would consider it Remington. For bar purposes, though, the important geographic fix is the nearby Homewood campus of Johns Hopkins University, which explains the bar's lacrosse-inspired decor and supplies most of its clientele.

Lacrosse sticks and clothing hang like icons above the busy bar. Indeed, lacrosse is built into the pub's very name, with crossed sticks comprising the first "x" in Stxx.

All the Hoppies -- together with a loud sprinkling from Loyola College and Towson State University -- give this place so much frat house fervor that the DJ spinning progressive dance records almost seems unnecessary. Bartender Tim Argis says most of the customers are in the 21-25 age bracket, but I'd go further: Anyone over 30 will feel like a senior citizen.

If these young collegians seem to drink a lot, they also drink cheap. The many nightly specials include 50-cent draft beer on Mondays, 75-cent Rolling Rock draft on Tuesdays, and a $1 for all drinks deal on Thursdays. By the end of an evening, beer bottles and pitchers are lined up on the tabletops like so many trophies.

Lest you think the future leaders of America are on a liquid diet, there is a full sandwich, sub, seafood and pizza menu to ensure they have access to solid food, too.
