David Strats of Clarksville, entering his first Striders race, announced that he would win the two-mile event on the hilly Longfellow course last Sunday.

He started from a sprinter's position and bolted away with the usual leaders -- Bobby Van Allen and Stephen Olenick. New to the course, Strats followed Van Allen closely through 1 3/4 miles. Then, at the top of the final hill, Strats unleashed a devastating sprint that overwhelmed young Van Allen.

Strats, who runs for the Howard Community College cross country team, crossed the finish line in 11 minutes, 10 seconds, 20 seconds ahead of Van Allen.

In the women's competition, Laura Daniels returned after a week's absence to easily win the two-miler in 15:50.

Inthe men's distance events, triathlete George Altieri took an early lead and held on for two miles, where the pack of Gary Anderson, CraigChasse and Jim Carbary took over. Looking over his shoulder for Altieri, Carbary cruised to win the 10-kilometer race in 37:05 -- his third 10K victory in a row. Anderson and Chasse turned off to run the 15K race and finished together -- far in front -- in 57:57.

Triathlete Sandy Ford had an easy time winning the women's 10K, finishing in 47:45.

Both Ford and Altieri recently returned from prestigious triathlons in the Pacific. At the International World Championships in Australia, Altieri competed for the U.S. Amateur Team and placed fifth overall among the 30-34 men. He completed the 1.5K swim, 40K bike and 10K run in a combined time of 1:56:07 -- in spite of 80-degree temperatures. Ford competed in the swim of 2.4 miles, the bike ride of 112 miles and the run of 26.2 miles in 12:18:04.

In addition to Ford, Columbia's Rob Vigorito also completed the Ironman. He beat Ford by five minutes, with a time of 12 hours, 13 minutes. Both triathletesstarted swimming in the early-morning sunlight and didn't finish until well after dusk.

On a foggy morning last Saturday, the Howard County Striders celebrated the 50th birthday of Dave Tripp, one of thegroup's most distinguished members. Nearly 90 runners and well-wishers appeared at 7 a.m. for the weekly Bagel Shoppe run at Wilde Lake Village Center. At the 4.5-mile point, Steve Carnahan and the entire cross country team of Oakland Mills High School met the contingent andplayed "Happy birthday" on kazoos.

After the run, the runners metwith non-runners at the Wilde Lake Village Center and enjoyed a bagel-and-cake brunch in honor of Tripp, whom they referred to as the "Father of Running in Howard County."

While these celebrations continued, three Striders were plugging through 50 miles of the Masochist Mountain Ultramarathon near Lynchburg, Va. Tom Green placed first among the countians, with a time of 9:10:02. Mark Konodi, the West Coast representative of the Striders, finished right behind him in 9:25:41.And Mike Strzelecki finished his first ultra in 10:31:30.

The Strider's weekly series takes next weekend off as many countians will becompeting in the Marine Corps Marathon. The series resumes on Sunday, Nov. 10, at Thunder Hill Elementary School.
