50 Years Ago (week of Oct. 26-Nov. 1, 1941):

* More than 175 Howard County homemakers attended the 15th annual Homemakers Achievement Day. The theme of this year's event, in Lisbon, was U.S. defense. Theday's program included a speech by Venia M. Kellar on "Homemakers ina Defense Program." Theodore R. McKeldin of Baltimore spoke on "Democracy and You." Luncheon was served by the Lisbon Homemakers.

* The Westwood Memorial Church observed its 20th anniversary thisweek with services, musical programs and a supper in the church hall.

25 Years Ago (week of Oct.

23-29, 1966):

* A group of Elkridge residents met this week at the Grace Episcopal Church parish house to discuss the possibility of establishing a recreation center forteen-agers similar to the one recently opened in Ellicott City. Community Action Director Ralph M. Schley described other community centers and the types of programs a recreation center in Elkridge might offer.

* It was announced this week that residential construction permits issued in Howard County in September 1966 had a total dollar value of $490,000, compared with $1,138,000 for the same month in 1965.This was seen as a reflection of an areawide downturn in housing starts.
