Lisbon Man, 78, Hit And Killed By A Car

A 78-year-old Lisbon man was struck and killed by a passing car yesterday morning as he crossed the road to get his newspaper.

Jay K. Cope of the 10600 block of Frederick Road was flown to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where he died several hours after the 7 a.m. accident.

Police said Cope, who was in the roadway, was hit by a 1990 Plymouth Voyager driven by Beverly Wilson, 34, of the 16500 block Old Frederick Road, Mount Airy. Wilson was traveling east when she struck Cope near the intersection of Route 94.

The accident is still under investigation, said police spokesman Gary Gardner. No charges have been filed against the driver, he said.


An Ellicott City woman suffered smoke inhalation during ahouse fire that caused $85,000 damage Saturday.

Sharon Semmont, 47, of the 5500 block Montgomery Road was treated at St. Agnes Hospital in Catonsville for mild smoke inhalation after a fire broke out in the kitchen about 2:45 p.m. She was later released

The county's Department of Fire and Rescue reported that eight units from three firestations responded to the fire, which was put out after three hours.

The kitchen, hallway, attic and roof were damaged by fire. Smoke damage occurred throughout the house.
