Closing of Charles Town threatened

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. -- Charles Town Race Track will close at the end of the 1991 racing season unless ways can be found to stem the losses experienced during the past year, said Charles Town Racing, Ltd. president D. Keith Wagner yesterday.

Wagner said that track employees would be given a 60-da notice stating that the track will close after racing Dec. 29 in accordance with federal regulations.

"We are hopeful that upcoming meetings with the West Virgini Racing Commission will be productive and that ways can be found to attract new fans to the track," Wagner said, "but we simply can not continue to operate unless we can remain profitable."
