October 28, 1991

A 25-year-old Middle River man was shot and killed late last night after he and an acquaintance got two small vials of crack cocaine and then attempted to rip off the dealer by paying only half the price for the drug, police said.

John Armstrong, of the 100 block of Lariat Drive, was pronounced dead at Francis Scott Key Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the back.

Police said Armstrong's body was found in a 1988 Pontiac Grand Am just before midnight in the 3500 block of Noble St. in Canton.

He was found lying in the passenger seat, which hadbeen folded back to the reclining position, police said.

The driver of the car told police that he and Armstrong were in East Baltimore to purchase crack. They drove up to a dealer and were handed two bags of the drug for which they were to pay $20.

They only gave the dealer $10, however, and someone opened '' fire on them as they drove away, police were told.

Police said the driver, whom they did not want to identify, drove to Canton and attempted to help the wounded man before he called the 911 emergency number. Police did not release the location of the shooting.
