"All he had to do was reach up and block it. I asked him, 'Why didn't you block it?' " said Chaump, who never has lost more than six games on any level. "He said, 'Coach, I didn't want to rough the punter.' You have all these things that you never expect. We play well, but we get caught with things I've never been caught with in coaching. You look at individual games and some of the things that happened, and all you can say is, 'What the heck.' "
Marcellus Campbell, a third-team all-state selection from Petersburg, Va., has worked into the rotation in Towson State's secondary, and perhaps should be the spokesman for this group.
FOR THE RECORD - CORRECTION
"It's exciting to go to practice," he said. "I play in fifth-back situations, so my role is different every week, depending on whether we're playing a passing team or a running team. And our experiences will help us in the long run."
Phil Albert, who coached Towson State to 14 straight non-losing seasons before moving up to Division I-AA in 1987, has had teams that failed to reach .500 three of the past four years.
"There needs to be a reproductive process," he said. "You close a deal, seal a contract, and you get reinforcement. Here you put in a lot of hours during the week, and there is no reproduction on Saturday. You come up empty.
"The responsibilities don't change whether you are 6-0 or 0-6. Sometimes you question yourself on whether you are being effective. I told our team Saturday that the 0-6 could be a steppingstone or a stumbling block. And our practices this week have been great. You'd think we were 6-1. The overall attitude is good, you just wish they'd get a win, a positive experience."
