'Chop' chant gets a thumbs up

It's your call

October 23, 1991

Native Americans shouldn't be offended by the tomahawk chant used by fans of the Atlanta Braves, according to a clear majority of respondents to "It's Your Call" yesterday.

Of the 420 callers, 126 (30 percent) found the chant offensive to Native Americans while 294 (70 percent) said it wasn't offensive and should continue.

In an interesting twist, however, only 27 percent felt that team names such as Redskins and Redmen are offensive and should be changed, compared to 73 percent who felt that such names are just fine as they are.

"It's Your Call" represents a sampling of opinions from certain segments of the community, but it is not balanced demographically, as would be done in a scientific public opinion poll.
