Atlanfed Bancorp Inc.

The parent company of Atlantic Federal Savings and Loan said that its earnings soared 59 percent during the quarter that ended Sept. 30, the second quarter of the company's fiscal year.

Atlanfed said that its profits rose mostly because of good results in the mortgage banking business and insurance subsidiaries. Increases in assets and deposits compared with a year ago are due to the company's purchase of the deposits of two branches of First Federal Savings Bank of Annapolis from the federal government, which had seized the Anne Arundel County thrift.
