With a month to go, college bowl rumors already are flying

October 16, 1991|By Knight-Ridder

Sure, it's only October, but the college bowl picture already is taking focus.

Representatives of the Orange, Fiesta, Sugar, Blockbuster, Citrus, Peach and Hall of Fame bowls were on the scene to watch Miami defeat Penn State, 26-20, and increase its record to 5-0.

Florida State and the Hurricanes, this week's top two teams, are also on the top of the list for the major bowls, which will extend official invitations Nov. 17.

There is already juicy speculation that the winner of Miami-Florida State could play Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl. Given the stormy relationship between Miami and the Irish, a matchup of those two could set off some serious fireworks.

A Miami-Florida matchup in the Sugar Bowl is possible if the Gators win the Southeastern Conference. That would please 'Canes fans who have been frustrated ever since one-time archrival Florida -- citing SEC scheduling conflicts -- dropped Miami after the 1987 season.

The fact Florida coach Steve Spurrier has always said he would love to have a 12th game on the schedule so he can play Miami should keep that rumor hot as the season winds down.
