State Police reported eight people were killed in traffic accidents over the weekend, including a woman and a man who died after their car went out of control on York Road near Sparks and struck a tree.

Police said the fatalities brought to 535 the number of people killed on Maryland roadways so far this year, compared with 593 at the same time last year.

In Baltimore County, police said Diana A. Price, 19, of the 20000 block of W. Liberty Road in White Hall, was driving a 1981 Nissan Maxima north on York Road in Sparks about 1 a.m. yesterday when she lost control of the car.

The car began to swerve and a passenger, Scott A. Cox, 28, of the 19000 block of Middletown Road, was ejected from the vehicle, police said. The car then crashed into a tree and split in half, trapping Price.

Police said Cox was taken to the Greater Baltimore Medical Center, where he died a short time later.

Price was airlifted by a Med-Evac helicopter to the Shock-Trauma Unit in Baltimore, where she died yesterday, police said.

In Kent County, James H. Miles, 43, and Margaret L. Terrell, 49, both of Wilmington, Del., were eastbound on Md. 291 about 2 a.m. yesterday in Miles' 1988 Plymouth, police said. As Miles approached the intersection with U.S. 301 just west of Millington, he failed to grant the right of way to a tractor-trailer, police said.

Police said Miles and Terrell were killed almost instantly in the collision.

The truck driver, Morris C. Patterson, 34, of Gulf, N.C., sustained minor injuries, police said.

Also yesterday, a Frostburg man was killed shortly after 8 p.m. when the 1989 Ford pickup truck he was driving east on Alternate U.S. 40 near Grantsville in Garrett County left the roadway on a curve and struck an embankment, police said.

The driver, Steven M. Keister, 24, was ejected from the truck when it overturned and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Shortly before 5 p.m. Saturday in Owings, Calvert County, two PTC cars collided, killing Michelle Lynn Wyckoff, 19, of Huntington, and injuring two men, police said.

Police said a Pontiac Firebird driven by Wyckoff was southbound on Md. 2 when it was struck by a 1987 Chevrolet Caprice driven by Daniel B. Brady, 17, who ran a stop sign while westbound on Mount Harmony Road.

Wyckoff and a passenger in Brady's car, Glen L. Travis, 16, of Shadyside, were taken to Calvert Memorial Hospital, where Wyckoff died and Travis was treated for injuries, police said.

About 2 a.m. Saturday in Baltimore County, Earl Miller, 19, of the 500 block of Carrollwood Road in Middle River, was killed when the 1991 Hyundai he was driving east in the 3100 block of Northwind Road near Carney left the roadway and crashed into a utility pole, police said.

Police said excessive speed apparently contributed to the crash.

Dewey Shroyer, 63, of Cresaptown in Allegany County, was crossing Md. 220 about 8:30 p.m. Friday when he was hit by a car driven by Sarah Jane Williams, 19, of Cumberland, police said.

Shroyer was taken to Cumberland Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival, police said.
