Firefighters killed in the line of duty during 1990, including three Marylanders, were honored yesterday in Emmitsburg at the 10th annual National Fallen Firefighters Memorial ceremony.
A plaque engraved with the names of the 105 firefighters from 35 states who were killed last year was dedicated at the ceremony. The seven-foot-tall, pyramid-shaped, limestone monument is etched with the names of 1,238 firefighters killed in the line of duty between 1981 and 1990.
Eleven firefighters from New York were killed last year, the most of any state. The three Maryland firefighters were Thomas E. Hicks, of the Citizens Volunteer Fire Company in Harford County; Daniel J. Raskin, of the Chestnut Ridge Volunteer Fire Company in Baltimore County; and Thomas Weeks, of Level Volunteer Fire Company in Harford County.
