Montreal Expos -- Sent P Greg McCarthy outright to Class AAA Indianapolis.

Milwaukee Brewers -- Placed former Baltimore Orioles C Rick Dempsey (.231, 4 HRs, 21 RBI in 147 AB) on waivers for the purpose of giving him his unconditional release.

New York Mets -- Announced that C Rick Cerone (.273, 2 HRs, 16 RBI in 227 AB) refused assignment and became a free agent.

Seattle Mariners -- Fired manager Jim Lefebvre and pitching coach Mike Paul. Retained coaches Gene Clines, Dan Warthen and Rusty Kuntz. Sent P Keith Comstock, P Brian Givens and P Mike Walker outright to Class AAA Calgary. Announced that Comstock refused assignment and became a free agent.


Orlando Magic -- Agreed on a contract extension with F Jeff Turner.

Philadelphia 76ers -- Signed G Hersey Hawkins to 4-year, $9 million contract extension. Cut G Mike Goodson.

San Jose Sharks -- Signed C Perry Berezan. Returned RW Ed Courtenay and LW Mikhail Kravets to Kansas City (IHL).
