Familiar Landmarks Dot County Calendar

October 09, 1991|By Jackie Powder

The photos of quaint streets, winter landscapes, city skylines and historic mansions look familiar. The local scenes are all featured in the "People and Places Howard County Calendar" for 1992.

The project is the result of a partnership between commercial photographer David Jones and publisher Kathy Rebeck.

"We wanted to put a little history of the county in, making sure we covered the whole county, not just Columbia and Ellicott City," Jones said.

Rebeck had done a local 1991 calendar with black-and-white line drawings, and she and Jones decided to team up to produce a full-color, glossy edition for 1992.

"Then we were faced with a problem," Jones said. "When we decided to do this, it was January of this year and we needed a year's worth of photos in six months."

To solve the problem and make sure all seasons were represented in the calendar, Jones and Rebeck ran a Howard County photo contest for amateur photographers. Local businesses contributed contest prizes, and theproceeds from the $5 contest entry fee were given to the Howard County Special Olympics.

Three contest photos are included in the calendar, which sells for $9.95 in area shops. It's also available in personalized form to allow businesses to give them to clients as holidaygifts.

Jones and Rebeck plan to make the county calendar and the photography contest an annual event.
