A Florida man was killed today in a head-on collision on the Baltimore Beltway just northeast of Francis Scott Key Bridge.
The fatal accident in the northbound lanes of the Beltway closed down the highway in both directions for three hours, causing traffic delays and backups in the area during the morning rush hour.
A Toll Facility Police spokesman said the van was southbound on Interstate 695 about 5:30 a.m. when it crossed the center line while attempting to pass a car and collided with a tractor-trailer in the northbound lane.
Both drivers were taken to Francis Scott Key Medical Center.
The van driver was pronounced dead on arrival. The nature of the tractor-trailer driver's injuries were not released.
Names of both drivers were being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
