Baltimore Orioles -- Signed manager John Oates to a 2-year contract. Announced that pitching coach Al Jackson will not be retained and first-base coach Curt Motton will be offered a different position in the organization.

Boston Red Sox -- Reinstated P Danny Darwin, P Jeff Gray and P Darryl Irvine from the 15-day DL and P Mike Miller and SS Tim Naehring from the 60-day DL. Waived Miller and P Dave Owen for the purpose of an outright assignment to Class AAA Pawtucket.

Chicago White Sox -- Announced that C Don Wakamatsu and OF Rodney McCray are free agents after refusing assignment to Class AAA Vancouver.

Florida Marlins -- Named John Young scout and Dan Lunett director of minor-league administration.

Kansas City Royals -- Announced that dugout coach Bob Schaefer and batting-practice coach Tom Burgmeier have not been retained for next year. Retained third-base coach Adrian Garrett, first-base coach Lynn Jones, bullpen coach Glenn Ezell and pitching coach Guy Hansen.

Minnesota Twins -- Signed executive vice president and vice president of player personnel Andy MacPhail to a 3-year contract.
