Survival Technology Inc.

BY THE NUMBERS

October 08, 1991

Survival Technology Inc., a health-care technology company, reported yesterday that smaller margins on non-military products offset a 44 percent jump in revenues and led to a drop in operating income during its fourth quarter, which ended July 31.

The Bethesda-based company's net earnings of 15 cents a share were identical to the per-share figure

from the comparable quarter of 1990, but 7 cents of the 1991 quarter's earnings represented extraordinary earnings from the company's use of tax-loss carry-forwards.

The drop in operating income was largely a result of Survival Technology's "change in product mix," said Jeffrey W. Church, vice president for finance.

The company is best known for its role in supplying nerve-gas antidotes to the military, a business line that accounted for 46 percent of its sales for the 1991 fiscal year. However, the company also showed a 75 percent gain in its revenues from commercial products, including self-injection devices for treatment of allergic reactions to bee stings or food.

According to Mr. Church, the company is repositioning itself to decrease its dependence on defense contracts. Commercial sales accounted for more than half of its fiscal 1991 revenues.
