Bail review due in fatal stabbing

October 07, 1991

A bail review hearing in District Court was scheduled today for a 54-year-old man who was charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing death of his estranged wife over the weekend, Baltimore County police say.

William Merryman Day, of the 800 block of Nannette Lane in Seneca Park in the east county, was arrested early Friday afternoon by police after a chase that ended when he crashed his car into a fence after he ran off Emala Avenue near Martin State Airport.

Police said William Day was being sought in connection with the stabbing death of his wife, Marie Ellen Day, 41, of the 1400 block of Shadetree Road, whose body was found about 10 a.m. Friday by officers responding to a call from a neighbor who discovered the victim's body.

The victim's assailant had climbed a ladder and entered through a window of the woman's second-floor apartment.

Police, who had a description of a suspect, spotted William Day driving his car on Emala Avenue and gave chase.

When the car went out of control and struck a fence near the airport, police rushed the vehicle and arrested William Day without incident.

In the car, police found a knife believed to have been the murder weapon.

William Day was being held without bail at the Essex District hTC station, pending today's hearing.
