Writer honored

Charlyne Varkonyi, food and home writer for The Sun, received a first place award and a $500 cash prize for feature writing last night at the Newspaper Food Editors and Writers Association's annual convention at the Harbor Court Hotel in Baltimore.

Her winning entry was a four-part series on Pacific Rim Cuisine, which ran in Maryland Kitchen in 1990.

Other winners in the category for newspapers with 200,000 circulation and more were Laurie Ochoa of the Los Angeles Times for a profile on the real Sara Lee and Linda Giuca of the Hartford Courant for a story on MRE rations. Overall, 24 winners were selected from 366 entries submitted from 62 newspapers in the United States and Canada.
