Late penalty proves costly for Bowie Va. State upends Bulldogs, 19-14

September 29, 1991

PETERSBURG, Va. -- David Peterson's 1-yard touchdown run with 50 seconds remaining, lifted Virginia State (2-3, 2-3) to a 19-14 victory over Bowie State (2-2, 1-2) yesterday in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association game at Rogers Stadium.

Trailing by 14-12 late in the fourth quarter, Virginia State had a first-and-goal at Bowie's 4-yard line, but was driven back 39 yards by a false start penalty, two quarterback sacks and a rushing play that lost 5 yards.

On fourth-and-43, Greg Clark's pass fell incomplete, but an interference penalty gave the Trojans a first down at Bowie's 14 with 1 minute, 26 seconds remaining. Three plays later, Patterson ran in the winning score.

Greg Clark led Virginia State, passing for 206 yards and two touchdowns.

Jason Herold threw touchdown passes of 39 and 31 yards to Thomas Butz, as Bowie built a 14-6 lead in the first half. Anthony

Redic rushed 14 times for 87 yards.
