The Westminster Invitational cross country meet will serve much the same purpose this year as the Hereford Invitational did in years past.
Though the Hereford meet, which was run for the final time last year, included many powerful out-of-state teams, one primary purpose of the event was to give runners a chance to tour the state championship course.
But renovation work at the northern Baltimore County school forced the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association to switch the state championships to Western Maryland College, giving added importance to this year's Westminster Invitational, which begins at 3 p.m. today.
The races start and finish near the college golf course clubhouse on Pennsylvania Avenue, and all five county schools will be among the 23 teams participating.
"There is some stiff competition out there," said Westminster coach Jim Gilford, who rattled off six out-of-county schools that could win the meet.

* Two intra-county matchups highlight the week's football slate, with Westminster trying to get on the winning track at North Carroll while the mighty South Carroll offense travels to Liberty. Both games will take place at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Westminster (0-3) finds itself in unfamiliar territory after dropping its first three. Coach Jeff Oeming plans to do some new things on both sides of the ball when the Owls take on North Carroll.
"We have to pressure their
quarterback on defense. They have good receivers and more speed in the backfield than in past years," Oeming said.
North Carroll coach Randy Clark says both teams need a win.
"We need to eliminate mistakes," Clark said.
"Offensively, we need to stay balanced. If we can't effectively pass the ball, that will hurt our running game. On defense, we'll have to stop the run and can't give up the big playon the pass."
South Carroll improved to 2-1 Saturday with a 12-7 win over host Glenelg, Howard County.
It was South Carroll's running game -- particularly senior Ronnie Robinson's 207-yard performance-- that did Glenelg in.
Robinson's 69-yard touchdown in the thirdquarter -- his second of the game -- was the difference.
Liberty (2-1) fell from the unbeaten ranks with a 7-0 loss to host Howard Friday night.
The only score of the game came at the start of the fourth quarter, highlighted by a 56-yard pass play from Howard quarterback Brad Stubbs to wide receiver David King.
