Penril DataComm Networks

BY THE NUMBERS

September 25, 1991

This Gaithersburg-based producer of testing instruments and data communications equipment reported record earnings for the company's fourth fiscal quarter and full year that ended July 31.

The company, formerly called the Penril Corp., said its earnings increased nearly 25 percent to $2.6 million, or 37 cents a share, during the past three months, compared with earnings of $2 million, or 30 cents a share, last year. Revenue in the period rose slightly more than 2 percent to $14.1 million from $13.7 million.

Richard D. Rose, vice president and controller at Penril, said the record gains resulted from a number of improvements, including new products, better profit margins and better efforts to control costs. No one area accounted for the bulk of the improvement, he said.

Penril, which is traded on the over-the-counter market, has 400 employees, including 240 in Maryland. Other manufacturing plants are located in Amsterdam, N.Y., and Danbury, Conn.

The company's overseas expansion also registered significant gains. Mr. Rose said that, while domestic sales were basically flat compared with last year, revenues from Penril's international operation accounted for 43 percent of total sales, up from 29 percent a year ago.
