City police have charged a 36-year-old East Baltimore man with first-degree murder in the shootout Sunday afternoon in the 1500 block of N. Bethel St. that claimed the lives of two men, one of them a bystander.

Police said Willie Wells, of the 1000 block of McAleer Court, was charged yesterday in the death of David G. McCrae, 32, of the 1500 block of Holbrook St., the man police said Wells was shooting at during a drug-related argument.

McCrae was shot in the stomach and died several hours later at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Shot in the head and pronounced dead at the scene was Titus Austin, 31, of the 1100 block of Brentwood Ave., who was sitting on the front steps of a house when the gunfire erupted.

Police said it is still not known from which gun the bullet was fired that killed Austin. They said ballistics tests continue.

Police said Wells was shot in the wrist and walked to Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he was treated and is in good condition. He is under police guard.

After his release from the hospital, Wells will be taken to the Eastern District for a bail hearing.

If bail is denied, police said, Wells will be remanded to the Baltimore City Detention Center.
