Five killed in traffic accidents

Five people, including a Charles County woman, her 6-year-old son and another child, were killed in traffic accidents over the weekend.

Three deaths occurred in La Plata when three vehicles collided at U.S. 301 and Md. 225 shortly before 5:30 p.m. yesterday.

Lt. William Saunders, of the Charles County Sheriff's Department, said a Mazda pickup truck driven by David R. Fenwick, 22, of Pomfret, went through a red light and struck a Nissan Sentra broadside.

The Mazda rolled over at least once and struck a Jeep Cherokee stopped at a traffic signal.

Saunders said Fenwick's daughter, Rokita, 6, was killed and his son, David R. Fenwick Jr., 2, was in serious condition today at Children's National Medical Center in the District of Columbia.

The father sustained facial cuts.

Also killed was the driver of the Nissan, Dolores L. Grove, 31, of Newburg, and her son, Eric, 6.

About 1 a.m. Saturday, Melvin J. Topa 3rd, 21, of the 8000 block of Babikow Road in White Marsh, died when his car went off a ramp from westbound Interstate 695 onto Pulaski Highway and crashed onto railroad tracks.

Paul Knode, 26, of Rhodesdale in Dorchester County, died Saturday afternoon at Peninsula General Hospital in Salisbury from injuries received when two pickup trucks collided at Main

Street and Md. 313 in Sharptown Friday night.
