Patterson, Northern game off

September 21, 1991

Patterson and Northern will not meet in football this season because of an incident after last year's game between the teams.

Although the game was listed on the schedules for both teams, it was decided last season that they would not meet this season. Last season's game was stopped by officials with 1 minute, 50 seconds remaining because of an increasing number of personal fouls. A brawl broke out when the teams lined up for the ceremonial handshake.

Northern coach Ike Hemphill said yesterday that he and Patterson coach Roger Wrenn, along with the athletic directors and principals from both schools, agreed that the schools should have a "cooling-off period" and not meet this season.

Wrenn and Hemphill said the game should not have been listed on the schedules.
